R1 = Secret designation name while under construction. Short for Rikugun 1 (Army 1).
GL = From God Land, a direct translation of "Shinshuu" into English.
MT = From the initials of Matsuda Kempei and Tajiri Masatsugu, commander and second-in-comamnd of the IJA Shipping Transport Command at that time.
