    They apparently blend the red blood cells with citric acid when returning them to the body, but it seems that your fingertips and such can go numb when they do that, and they told me it was necessary to take calcium to prevent it.

    In fact, my face felt like it was swelling, and it was a little tough.

    I wonder how high his platelet count is... I have a ridiculously high one.

    The numbing here is caused by calcium loss because they need to use an anticoagulant, and it ends up getting returned with the rest of the blood to the body (after all, the point of collecting platelets is for their clotting factor, for people really that need that). Sodium citrate is typically used for the anticoagulant (and is a salt of citric acid). A shortage of calcium causes numbing because it's important for nerves to work.
