From what I remember, they shared a stomach and one had to deal with whatever the other ate. If Cat cleaned himself, Dog would cough up hairballs.

I think that only happened in the opening. I don't remember the show ever actually showing that.

I remember it being a regularly mentioned issue, cat complained about how much dog's eating habits affected him constantly and I'm pretty sure there was an entire episode dedicated to it.
