Good old pagers. Remembered begging my parents for one (never got it, anyway) because they were dirt cheap with the low-end models going for < $50 compared to the $400+ for an average mobile phone back then.

Another huge benefit about the pager was that if someone you didn't like paged, it was extremely easy to justify not calling them back with the universal "there are no pay phones where I was at" excuse. Can't do that with mobile phones.
