I don't see how they could make that connection except by writing out both their names in English.

Oh, I didn't realize you could write out the kanji like that. I guess I always assumed it was kinda rude to not "spell" someone's name right...

Hiragana is how you "read" the kanji. You need it to know how to pronounce someone's name, since kanji can have multiple readings, which change what they mean.
