I never did understand the hate, he's stuck in a dead-end job and lives a completely unfulfilling life - he's basically you if your Granddad hadn't given you a ticket out of your hell.
Put it this way - if he looked like Alex, everyone would suddenly find excuses for his behaviour. But since he ain't hot or a protag, he gets shat on.
