Let me help you out there. the face looks like that of the eva's with it's mask off, eyes and all. The At field im almost 100 percent certain is actually coming from Rei not Shinji

Actually, I'm pretty sure Shinji is projecting the AT field in the form of instinctive, absolute defense.

It's not supposed to make perfect sense, it's for humor.
