Shinn assumed it was Kira. Kira might have taken out the Destroy, but as far as personal injury, Shinn was the only one that had actually hurt her as far as we know.

And I think you'd have to explain "pinky swear" to Stellar. She might like shinny, pretty things (like knives), but she's most likely ignorant of alot of things since she didn't have a normal childhood.

I seem to recall that the shrapnel came from when Kira fired his railguns at Stellar's exposed cockpit. Sure, the cockpit was exposed because Shinn cut it open with a beam saber, but Stellar wasn't injured by that attack.
