They are rabites, a common critter in the seiken games.

I have, but it was quite some time ago (and I currently can't play console video games anyway). The name "rabite" didn't stick.

And no, not everyone would have because they aren't as common as a lot of other JRPGs in the west. Most people who aren't gamers wouldn't even recognize the title.
