Something like this happened to me. I was looking something up.(can't remember what.) And i came to this site that supposedly had info but required are you a robot check that looked different from usual. I clicked on the confirm in the box twice and downloaded over 2000 viruses and malware. Malwarebytes saved me in this case, but just goes to show how easy it is to get yourself screwed. I'm good with tech so I recognized I was screwed after second click though.
