Seriously. The anime guys had no right to decide what everyone's Zanpakutou's spirit looks like. Especially their sexes.
I mean, they're essentially following a strict rule of Male Shinigami = Male Zanpakutou Female Shinigami = Female Zanpakutou
This completely defeats the purpose of it being established that female Zanpakutou are rare. Not to mention that it's obvious that Tobiume and Haineko are male. The only reason Shunsei's Zanpakutou is depicted as female is because it's been firmly established previously that his Zanpakutou is female. I'm surprised they haven't used Urahara, considering that his Zanpakutou's name, Shikai, release command, and sex have all been firmly established. Hell, even Benihime's personality has been touched upon a bit.
The only thing I feel they got right was Ikkaku's Zanpakutou sleeping and Wabisuke hunching over with a huge slab of stone on his back. Symbolism: Win.
Right to do this and possible chance of fscking up Tite Kubo's future plans: Fail.
