To add on, given that the staff seems to brainwash the user into ignoring the discomfort but doesn't actually make it intuitive for the user to move a different body, the adventurer may just be perceptive enough to notice awkward movements the monsters themselves don't notice, which doesn't apply to the mimic since she's a natural shapeshifter and can mimic movements perfectly.
