The damage should be high enough though, considering at one point, I had an elekid at 89 vs a 87 Palkia and killed it in two hits.

It's actually more annoying to see his Pikachu lose to some random scrub he meets than to see his supposedly well-trained pokemon win after years of training it.

What was wrong with that? Personally I liked the show better back in those days. Ash won his battles creatively since he was still new to training he had a young mind so he wasn't restricted by the "logic" of winning battles. I'd rather watch a Pikachu beat an Onix than watch, say, a Nidorino beat one with Double Kick. Pikachu also had more personality back then and wasn't just an "Ashes best friend/mascot". Pikachu actually made choices important to the series, like when Ash was debating whether or not to evolve Pikachu with the Thunder Stone to defeat Raichu and he left it up to Pikachu to decide. Right now the show just exist as satisfaction to the fans to watch something on TV, but back then it was creative! Not trying to start a debate here or anything, but the Kanto season and a bit of the Johto season were the best in my opinion.
