I don't know Japanese but this does make sense in Chinese.

Old Japanese is essentially Chinese.

It's chinese poetry (traditional style chinese poetry, I might add)

Bet you the old Chinese didn't have a rack like that to inspire them, though.

I'm no good with translating Chinese literature (especially the nuances of it), and the handwriting doesn't help, either. If somebody else could try to translate this, that'd be very nice.
