The 'elf' (root word: Alfar, scandinavian origin), is actually a spirit that is feared by the people of antiquity. Some do simple mischief as a child would, but I read in one of my books that some elves were fearful, evil spirits that did things like murder children and sap the sexual fertility of humans.
An old 80s horror film called 'Elves' explores this idea in more detail.
Note that I know absolutely nothing about this series, these characters or this artist, I simply happen to see the 'elf' tag and see the obvious Nazi trappings and, since the nazis were interested in the occult, made a connection, however tenuous.
