She was the most important character in Breath of the Wild. Regardless of whether you consider it canon or not, she was also *by far* the most important in Age of Calamity. Link on the other hand is in serious need to come into his own. He hasn't had a journey. He hasn't had a story. He's just her stooge.
Remember that Link is supposed to represent the every man, while also embodying personal freedom. A free-spirited adventurer. He can assume the role of knight in shinning armor, but it is *a role*. It is not who he is.
Boiling him down to a patsy for the spoiled princess, well, that's not very fun.
