I know it's not canon, but for me I'd like it this way, going by games;

Red - Charmander
Blue - Squirtle
Green - Bulbasaur
Gold - Cyndaquil
Silver - Totodile
Crystal - Chikorita
Brendan - Treecko
May - Torchic
Lucas - Piplup
Barry - Turtwig
Dawn - Chimchar (Not really fitting, I know, but it'll have to do)

I actually find Lucas-Turtwig/Barry-Chimchar/Dawn-Piplup to be the most fitting (esp. Barry-Chimchar). This also works well since I always choose the Grass-type as the male playable.

You guys are aware this is the characters in the manga, not the game right?

One problem. Blue is supposed to be Green and Green is supposed to be Blue.
