Actually, what I think the artist is saying, is; the one on the right is "younger Squall and Laguna" and the left is later on.
Because, what Laguna is wearing on the left, is the "daddy Laguna" outfit, when you meet him in the present. On the right is his young outfit.
For Squall, the Dissidia outfit on the right is his 'younger' outfit. (Seeing as really, it's an updated outfit) and on the left is his Kingdom Hearts outfit, where he's older.
