I haven’t ever worn chainmail, but I am guessing that wearing it directly on the skin is asking to be badly pinched numerous times. Also doesn’t it not entirely work at stopping piercing attacks right away?

Yeah, from experience you absolutely want something between chainmail and your skin. Your skin will bleed rather quickly else. I am also generally unsure of having chainmail that tight in term of comfort and also cause you would want to avoid risk that a wound insert a ring in your inside. I suppose the option of it being chainmail-printed clothe would be somewhat reasonable for a "lighter" armor tho, albeit that feel like not enough padding for the plate part too..

For the curious, the other strange part is that usually people wear helmet and cover their upper arms and legs before covering the lower legs and wearing gauntlets, and the breastplate is way too fitting too. (yes, I am aware it's to make the armored knight sexier :p)
