hrm... while I admittedly have absolutely no practical knowledge of sword techniques, let alone for a katana... isn't it rather odd for Youmu to be holding it that far from the guard?

I like how this artist actually put guides on Sakuya's throwing knives.

@Dakkan Actually that's the correct way to hold a katana, especially since it appears to be that she's a righty. The non dominant hand must hold the back of the hilt; the dominant hand after that is placed close to the guard for the two-handed strike for added power.

Ex-Youmu, anyone? Or should we hold out on that classification to see if Kuroneko can pull out an even more epic Youmu for the comic finale? (Edit: Ninja'd by Zenom in last page :S)

Just seems an unusual way of holding one with a single hand. The only other instance I can recall of someone holding a katana one-handed in such a way was in Rurouni Kenshin's version of Saitou and his gatotsu style.

This Youmu- Now more broken than her UNL version.

It's a perfectly good way to hold a sword, just not one you'll find taught in any kendo school or the like. The only reasons to hold it in the more traditional just under the guard grip is for a small amount of grappling tricks, which a katana is too long for anyway, and easier balance. If you have the skill and grip to overcome the latter, holding it at the end gives you a very nice advantage of range, which is why Saitou used it, as was mentioned.

She most likely just let go with her dominant hand to use a hand to hand technique. Throwing in a few non sword moves into a style is useful for throwing an enemy off balance.
