    The mission was mainly intended to be a demonstration of power/propaganda for the Nation. Send hundreds of ships out into space with brave explorers to colonize new worlds. If they found a new planet, good job. If not, well there's a reason the Penrose was considered 'low-cost'.
    It wasn't really intended to get rid of people like Ariane, she only joined the mission to get away from her life on Rotfront and avoid being assigned to Sierpinski.
