Artist's commentary:

ドイツ空軍のジェット戦闘機。
政府命名の｢フォルクスイェーガー｣や空軍命名の「ザラマンダー」などの愛称で有名ですが、開発元であったハインケル社では「シュパッツ(雀)」と呼ばれていました。

メッサーシュミットMe262と並行して計画された機体で、双発かつ高い練度を必要としていたMe262に比べ、容易な操縦・容易な整備を基本コンセプトとし、未熟なパイロット候補生などにも充分乗りこなせるような単純な設計とした結果、単発のジェットエンジンを背中に背負うような形となりました。
ジェット戦闘機の最大の特長である速度はMe262同様ドイツの戦術には大いにフィットしましたが、信頼性が低い当時のジェットエンジンを単発にするのはあまりに無謀で、実用化されればより多くの若いパイロットを失っていたのではないでしょうか。

Heinkel He 162 Spatz is a jet fighter of the Luftwaffe.
Though its pet names, like the RLM's "Volksjager" or air force's "Salamander", are famous, it was called "Spatz (Sparrow)" by its developers Heinkel.
It was developed concurrently with the Messerschmitt Me 262, and compared to the two-motored Me 262 and its steep learning curve the He162 was (originally) designed for ease of operation and maintenance, so that inexperienced cadets would be able to pilot it effectively. As a result it was outfitted with one single jet engine on its back.
The He 162's speed, the main feature of a jet fighter, was, like the Me 262, well suited to Germany's strategy. However jet engines were at the time very unreliable, and it was quite reckless to use a single-engine design. Had it been put into use it is likely that many more young pilots would have been lost.
