Fairey Fulmar is a carrier borne two-seater fighter aircraft of the Royal Navy. Even though it is a fighter aircraft, it was turned into a two-seater citing reasons of "survival and safety." It really shows the British mentality. Still, the aircraft was a kind of multi-role fighter suitable for bombing and air reconnaissance as well as air defense battle...However there were also simple views that the two-seat airplane was not suitable to be a fighter aircraft. Although it is said that as successor of the Fairey Fulmar, it showed a performance that exceeded expectations, the Fulmar was pretty poor in the first place. Well, it was certainly equipped with the new type of flaps and because its ability to fly at low speeds was stable, it was probably a bit better than the Seafire, which had an arrester hook that constantly failed to engage. Nonetheless, its basic performance was not inferior when compared to other aircrafts considered to be mainstream at the time; it was subsequently fitted with a radar and could even be used as a night fighter; and so it was a "fighter aircraft that in terms of active service was next after the Spitfire, Mosquito, Swordfish, Hurricane, Typhoon and Tempest." Or put another way, because the reputation of the others was so bad, it was made to look like an extremely decent fighter aircraft. Although you might only be able to say that this British aircraft was "actively in service," I think that it might have been one of the better ones.
