Looking at the fragments added to the translations i am finding that i am beginning to agree with you, it is becoming potentially soul crushing
What makes this worse is the fact that Reimu saw it coming and even accepted it, not even bothering to put up a fight. What makes this even hella worse is what Ran presumably resigned herself to so two people ended up destroyed in cruel twists of fate.
