I honestly can't blame them though, when you have legions of TTGL fans loudly proclaiming it to be "the best series EVER" without understanding or appreciating all the sources it pulled inspiration from. I'll bet better than 75% of all TTGL fans -- the western ones, at least -- have never even heard of Shin Getter Robo or GaoGaiGar.

Sadly, retro fags are too blinded with nostalgia and can only like anything that originated before the 21st century.
Well, "retro fags" certainly seem more progressive despite appreciating things of the past, that is, they won't resort to that offensive word, the f@g word, to depreciate things they don't like.
Let's be honest though, TTGL fans are quite vocal. TWN fans or FLCL fans I don't hear as much, but it may just be that those franchises are much smaller. NGE fans also don't seem to make as much noise.
