Time to bust out the blue truth: Renko came across Maribel holding the love letter, naturally assumed a guy had given it to her (or that Maribel was planning to give it to a guy), and is running off in dismay, when Maribel was actually planning to reject it (or was planning to give it to Renko). Classic romantic comedy misunderstanding.

... I guess Renko really loved merry, but seeing her with a card (possibly thinking that Merry got herself a boyfriend), it’s wrecked her heart and possibly went to shut herself up... permanently.
