How the hell did they not notice the bomber/incoming missile? That sort of thing tends to catch one's eye... At least, based on the size of the cloud to estimate yield (if it's a nuke, that is) and distance, it's going to be fast: the overpressure will kill them both before radiation poisoning starts to get painful (although technically, they should be incinerated by radiant heat by now).
