Electronic cigarettes are most likely the best alternative to those who wish to smoke and/or desire to quit. It provides the oral/hand habit, as well as makes no real change to their lifestyle, removing the multitude of chemicals and carcinogens that normal cigarettes have, leaving only a certain level of nicotine, and even that to the user's choice.
However, electronic smoking is not for a "fashion" statement for those who have never smoked before. While "vaping" is fully safer than "smoking," the active ingredient of "e-liquid" has yet to be shown if it is a carcinogen as well.
Keep in mind, it may very well not be: the one research report that exists regarding it may or may not have been selective in its facts or conclusions regarding e-smoking as part of a tobacco industry bias. Regardless, e-smoking is a choice alternative to current smokers who wish to extend their lives at the cost of some taste (which can be gotten used to, or different e-juice used), and a lifestyle switch.
