It could be that she was diabetic. She's surrounded by sweets that she either doesn't want or can't eat but cheese is one of the best foods for a diabetic since it doesn't raise your blood sugar level.

Nope, according to the official guide book, her mother was ill (the illness wasn't, AFAIK, specified), although, if you go by the concept of literary criticism called "Death of the Author" (which postulates, that he interpretation of a work by it's author is no more and no less valid than anyone else's), your guess resp. interpretation is as good as the guide book's.
