I'm getting a transparent background but only when viewing the full size, which I believe is how it is supposed to work.

Pretty much this.
If you check transparent background you'll see that this happens to all pictures with transparent sections.
This mechanic is also abused by artists to create an image where its thumbnail differs from the original.
