  • Which illustration inspired “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream?

I’m captivated by the inspiration for Harlan Ellisons short story.

I have found the cartoon that inspired the name and that is the first photo. However, I think I narrowed the inspiration down to two drawings. The second one is included in a portfolio of Dennis Smiths work with an appreciation written by Harlan Ellison where he mentions being inspired by one of his illustrations. However, he uses a quote from his short story to describe the illustration.

As for the third one, this is credited to Frank N. Smith as the illustration for the 1967 March Edition of IF Magazine. But it looks eerily similar to the second illustration which leads me to believe this might be a mistake of credit, crediting the drawing to a fictional Frank N. Smith and not Dennis Smith.

Does anyone know the exact illustration?
