I’m going to give the tangential take that assaults and killings as these are something leftists and urbanists really have to address if they want America to be more transit oriented. Sure, incidents like these aren’t constantly occurring by the second, but they bring up the contentious questions of how to address the homeless who roam the system, should fare evasion be cracked down to stem potential troublemakers, how to police these places with cops or security, taking actions of self defense in light of Jordan Neely, and a whole slew of other public safety topics. The ‘beauty’ of cars is that while yeah you can face crazy people too, there’s a certain level of personal agency that allows you to directly flee danger in the safety of your metal box; folks may also carry defensive weapons as guns in their vehicles. By its very nature public transit is social, so in order for it to be successful and perceived as usable there has to be a higher standard of order upheld, which this attack calls attention to. Edit: looking at this now, why did I write this blob of rant text? Whatever.

Funny that this isn't a problem in the rest of the world. Or in America, say, half a century ago.
It's a social problem, not a problem with public transport.

Various other parts of the world have had assaults and murders and what-not taking place inside trains (unfortunately). You can't make this in to something that's somehow unique to 'murica and her people and culture like how you're insinuating.

Encouraging transit use here is more than just a crime issue, we could talk car lobbying, nimby, upfront cost, and plenty more beyond what can come to mind in the moment. I admit my biases lead the text wall, but I genuinely believe from a ground level perspective that safety (from security to maintenance) is on the mind when people here consider to use transit or advocate expansion. I see it the way that one might avoid a bad street or part of town, only en masse and avoiding infrastructure. NNescio is correct, indeed a social issue. One we have trouble fixing.
How is this in current events? Did i miss something? Can someone explain, please?
The image references the brutal murder of a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee on a transit train (link). The murder though has been amplified as a political talking point by the Trump Administration for pushing for their broader crackdown on crime, although should also note they had also been considering removing the legal protections of Ukrainian refugees so they could be deported.

I think that a some point the internet forgot the "comedy" part of "offensive comedy". It now feels like people are just pumping the most insulting crap they can think and once someone calls them out of it their only reaction is simply "why can't you take a joke?" Well, that because it's not even a joke to begin with...

The point isn't to make you laugh, it's to get a response from you. It's nothing more than troll behavior. The correct response is RBI; Report, Block, Ignore.
Just to add some additional details of the murderer and his record of crime and his record showing severe mental illness in the last several years.
Show
The murderer involved has a history of crime with around 20 interactions with police since 2007 (when he was 16) to the murder, should note this includes his interactions after he was officially diagnosed with a mental illness. Some of the crimes he committed included breaking into an apartment to steal and robbing a man of his cellphone and money while brandishing a gun. For the armed robbery he was sentenced over 6 years in prison. When he was released in 2020 though his family noticed he had begun displaying signs of mental illness with behaviors such as staring into space and muttering nonsense. Although at the time they didn't understand what it was.
He apparently firmly believed that a foreign man-made substance had been embedded into his body giving control of his body to the government. When his family tried to reassure him that didn't happen, he'd become agitated and do things such as punching walls. Overtime he became more aggressive and easy to anger resulting in him attacking him family members, at one point strangling his sister in anger. They tried to have him taken in by a mental health facility, but unfortunately due to what one analyst from a conservative think tank called a "bipartisan catastrophe" they would not and could not take him. The Supreme Court ruled around 50 years ago limiting people being forced to involuntary treatment requiring courts to have to find the person a danger to themselves or others first. Liberal politicians in turn had raised the bar on what constituted as being a danger making it harder to qualify, and conservative politicians to keep cost lows kept the number of treatment beds low, thus insuring facilities would not have capacity. Thus even if they could prove he was a danger to have him detained for treatment, the facilities couldn't take him because they were already filled.
In 2023 after he attacked his mother and stepfather, he was temporarily committed to a facility where they diagnosed him with schizophrenia and prescribed medication, but only for 14 days and then released because they said it was not possible for them to take him in. In the end his family considered him too dangerous to have him live with them and on his own he didn't take his meds and even got hooked on drugs. He eventually ended up homeless, but would routinely complain to the local hospitals, police, and even FBI about the foreign material in his body. After he murdered the Ukrainian refugee woman from jail he told his sister that finally the authorities would have no choice but to deal with the foreign material in his body because it caused him to attack a stranger.
One side note, as politicians going after "cashless bail" (the practice of allowing defendants deemed less risky to go free without paying up front) have used his case as proof the practice needs to end. Based on his record he had multiple times posted bail, only to not show up to court thus forfeiting his bail bond. Alternatively later during recent cases where the courts would not require him to post bail, he'd comply with the court's orders and appear without issue.
We used to shame people for making shit like this.
I mean We also used to shame people for being pedophiles and discriminating against minorities but alas the times they are a changing and not for the better
