    I always wondered if it was an encoding thing with the fansub I get or a quirk of the show but the colours all get darker when the fast action starts.

    IIRC, it's required by TV broadcasters in Japan due to seizure fears or something. The first season's TV run was the same way if memory serves, and it'll be fixed on the Blu-ray release.
