Why do so many otherwise good artists find water streaks and sweat so hard? The trick is simply to balance the specularly highlighted and the non-shining areas to approximately average out to the underlying skin's color.
(The areas that look a little darker from the viewer's eye position are that tiny bit darker because the light that would otherwise be diffusely reflected is bounced off the surface of the water as a more-concentrated gleam viewable from a different angle. This concludes our optics lesson for the day.)
