The Thonburi-class were equipped with Japanese-made 20 cm/50 3rd Year Type naval guns, which were mounted on Kaga and Akagi during their early, post carrier-conversion days (they still retained some of them after modernization). These guns were also the main armament of most Japanese heavy cruisers.

But yeah, slapping four of them on a ship with a shallow draft and a displacement similar to most destroyers? Sure, you're going to have stability problems.

Still, heavy-cruiser firepower!

Oh and don't worry, Poi, you'll get heavy cruiser firepower once you reach Kai Ni.
