Yeah, this style of characters is more common with handwriting. That first character is actually そ. Just, instead of writing the top like the upper half of the letter Z, it's broken down into two strokes. This is very common in handwriting.
The text is 「そっちのネタ、だ...だめだって！」I would translate that to something like "This is inappropriate" or maybe like "This is a bad joke"
My most literal translation would be "That kind of joke material is no.... no good!" But personally, I like to make it read more naturally.
