I really expected Macross Frontier to solve the mistery (and it looked like it would at first), but no cigar. Dammit Kawamori give some closure to their story for Christ's sake!

Yeah, a lost colony ship unable to interact with the rest of humanity (sporadic though it may be) wouldn't have held up for long. Isolation would have been the end of them. I mean, these weren't Frontier colony ships with all the pleasantries. They were crude and hastily designed to accomdate human beings. Intergalactic travel being undertaken by a race that hadn't even left it's solar system, alongside a spartan-like warrior race that couldn't empathize at all with their comparatively frail human counterparts and didn't have much scientific understanding themselves...

Well, AFAIK The Megaroad was a very advanced ship and had plenty of life support and supplies. In fact its armaments were minimal to ensure this. Some unknown alien treat would have been a more likely cause of trouble (Vajra? Since they populate the center of the galaxy...).
One of the most wacky theories I've heard is that they misfolded and ended a million years in the past and became the Protoculture.

One of the great frustrations of being a Macross fan is the comment made by the owner of SMS, about how he needed Fold Quartz so he could go "to where you are, Minmei." Then they make two movies...and don't even bring this the fuck up. I am livid at Kawamori for not caring about us enough to go somewhere with this.
