Ignoring the WW2 one, the three pics make it look like the soldier saved an orphaned girl from the battlefield, she became attached to him and started crying when he tried to leave her at some camp. But now, at least a couple of years later based on her appearance, he still doesn't know how to deal with her, even though she's all the happier being under his care.

Seems he hasn't been home for years & has been her guardian of sorts since picking her up maybe?
