IRC, or Internet Relay Chat, is a text-based chat system designed for group communication in discussion forums by Jarkko Oikarinen.in 1988. Users connect from an IRC client to an IRC server, which might be part of a larger IRC network.
The service is popular with FOSS communities; many Linux distributions maintain an official IRC channel for user support and other project-related conversation.
