Her outfit changes with each remodel: As UIT-25 (or "Ui"), she gains arm warmers, red, white, and black shoulder pads, and a black hairband. Then, upon becoming I-504 (or "Go"), she reverts to her white hairband and wears a whiteschool swimsuit. Her standard submarine rigging, with its grey and green livery, mostly stays the same.
Because of having a male name (and also sharing a name with Luigi from the Mario series), she calls herself "Lu."
The historical Luigi Torelli was one of only two ships to serve all three major Axis powers (the other being another Italian submarine, the Comandante Cappellini). The submarine operated in the Atlantic from September 1940 until mid-1943, then was sent to the Far East. After Italy's surrender in 1943, the Luigi Torelli was taken over by Germany's Kriegsmarine and renamed the UIT-25, then, in the waning months of the war, by the Imperial Japanese Navy as I-504. She was captured by American forces at the end of the war and scuttled in 1946.
