One of the most popular anime of all time on top of being a popular mecha series, created by Anno Hideaki initially with GAINAX and now with his company Studio Khara. It has mechanical designs by Yamashita Ikuto and character designs by Sadamoto Yoshiyuki. Evangelion was first released as a TV anime series in October 1995.

Originally planned as a parody of the traditional super robot mecha anime genre tropes at the time (according to creator Anno), it surprisingly became an extremely successful and long lasting franchise despite its mentally and socially troubled protagonists and Anno's original intention to troll super robot mecha otaku.

The Evangelion franchise also spans the initial manga, and many spin-offs in various media.
