Musical notation in which a dot is placed directly above or below the corresponding note, to represent that the note should be played shorter, and thus detached from the following note.
This should not be confused with dotted notes (dotted half note, dotted quarter note, dotted eighth note, etc.), where the dot is placed slightly to the side of the corresponding note, and which extends the length of the note in question instead.
