PayPal Holdings, Inc. is an American multinational financial technology company. They operate an online payment system and payment processor for online vendors, auction sites, and other businesses. PayPal was created through the merger of the software developer Confinity and X.com, an online financial services company founded in March 1999 by Elon Musk. It was renamed PayPal from X.com in 2001 after Peter Thiel replaced Elon as CEO. PayPal remained the owner of the X.com brand until 2017 when they sold it back to Elon.
