The variant of AKM assault rifle with an MP40-style bottom-folding stock. Like the nomenclature of its predecessor, the AKS-47, the letter S on "AKMS" stands for складной (Skladnoy), Russian for "folding".

Not to be confused with the AKS-74, which has triangular side-folding stock.
