makaimura

A series of platformer games by CAPCOM, known in the West as Ghosts 'n Goblins.

The first entry in the series was Makaimura (Ghosts 'n Goblins), released in arcades on July 7, 1985. It was followed by Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts) and Chou Makaimura (Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts).

Lots of things made this series memorable: the dark fantasy setting, some instantly recognizable tunes, a campy sense of humor (e.g. one single hit would make Arthur lose his full plate armor and run around in strawberry patterned underwear), the Engrish -- and last but not least, its fiendish difficulty.
