American salute
salute
A gesture of greeting and respect, typically a hand raised in the air.
Salutes vary across countries and even within different branches of the military in the same country. American salutes consist of the forearm at a 45° angle to the forehead, with the blade hand with palm towards face. British salutes are similar, but with the palm facing outward. The straight-arm salute (also called the Roman or Nazi salute) has the arm extended straight out and upwards.
A salute should not be confused with simple waving or making the V sign.
