x-36

An American prototype jet fighter aircraft designed in 1997 to test the concept of airplanes without tail surfaces. The prototype was built to 28% the scale of a normal fighter jet and remotely controlled from a ground-based virtual cockpit; the second main innovation was a sophisticated fly-by-wire system capable of compensating the airplane's yaw and pitch instability. Two units were built and 31 flights were made, with the X-36 showing a very good handling in all of them; however, no further interest was shown in the concept, and the project was shelved. Both units are currently in display at military aviation museums in the United States.

The X-36 was featured in Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere as the XFA-36A Game, the most powerful regular airplane of the game, second only to the three unlockable airplanes.
