...I think that giving someone sweet corn is a way to call that someone shit. Opera singing shit, yes, but still shit. Why would you do that to Kogasa?
Oh god, I /still/ don't fully understand the background behind this one. What happened was towards the end of while we were all in the karaoke room on Saturday, E-mouse (Chen from earlier videos) waltzes up and says that he has a gift for Mizuki-san... and whips out this can of corn. All I know is that he was put up to this by Purvis. Sadly, I derped up and while I thought I was recording this, I didn't, so all I have is proof of the delivery: http://youtu.be/jFeC0GZN69o.
I don't remember this happening, buut if E-Mouse actually gave Mizuki-san a can of My Essentials corn, then Purvis was most assuredly pulling the strings.
Well, the American Midwest is the major area for corn farming in the US... it would kinda be like bringing some crab home if you went to Hokkaido... except they didn't have time to actually go there, I assume.
I didn't know if this was an American joke, a local specialty product, or just a souvenir. I was happy to receive souvenirs, but really, what the heck!? :-) By the way, I also got some maple sugar and some beer. I got a bunch of other stuff later too, but that's for yet another day.
Reader-added tags include "Nice corn", "I don't understand" (a la QB), "Golden water from Kisume's bucket" (see the survey), and "You've revived, Momiji-san". (Sure, some people know it's not the same Momiji, but how are you gonna tell just from this strip?)
The poll asks:
What would make a good souvenir of Gensokyo? • A bowl from Mayohiga • Delicious water from Kisume's bucket • Gensokyo's fastest photos • Tenshi's keystone • Sunflower seeds collected from places unknown
It actually happened on the second day in the karaoke room. The best part was Sola translating and trying to keep a straight face. "Mirai...cornu desu!"

Except the con was, I believe, in Boston, which is on the east coast. Boston clam chowder is the only food I can think of that they're famous for.
I put E-mouse up to doing this to perpetuate an old tradition from a forum he and I used to go to. Corn was an well respected meme there, and it became kind of a rallying point for us during IRL meet-ups. At one meet-up (Otakon 2003, I think?), one of our members brought cans of corn and passed them out. So a friend and I took them and started bartering with them in the artists alley for sketches, and later with cosplayers for their props, trying to outdo each other with the stuff we got.
So I figured I might as well direct Mus to offer one to Mizuki as a continuation of this fine tradition.
I've never seen a Hannaford, but Food Lion certainly sells My Essentials at least.
Wikipedia says they're sister supermarkets both run by Delhaize America, who now use a common store brand amongst all their chains. My Essentials is likely this.
Also for anyone that wants to compare details, I went to Hannaford this afternoon, and they were right in one of the On Sale bins outside the entrance into the actual store.
Huh, he drew a mouse, that cosplayed as a cat, as a dog. That's a promotion, right? I was trying really hard not to bust out laughing myself as Sola was telling Mizuki-san about the can of corn. Beyond

I had no idea what the reference could have been, and that really only works with corn on the cob. Then you guys mention purvis, and it all makes sense now.
For the poll, I'm tempted to say sunflower seeds, because of Yuka, but now that I've seen post #518886, I'll take some water from Kisume's bucket.
It's really interesting reading these comics and hearing about the events that went along with them from you guys. It's too bad that this little "arc" of the comic is coming to a close, though.
I would have gotten corn on the cob if I hadn't found out that I could actually have the weekend off until the Monday before (as opposed to the fucking month ago I first asked for it off - this supervisor, god) - it's what we happened to have in the pantry.
Damnit you guys, now everything's been explained before I even showed up. I'm a little disappointed it wasn't made into Chen, though...

That would have be awesome if you could have gotten corn on the cob. I would have put the Dr. Weird intro theme on my phone to play it just for the moment.
Don't know why Mizuki-san chose to draw you as Momiji; he's drawn everyone else that cosplayed as their character. Come to think of it, I think Momiji has been used to represent the most people now; you, wolftengu/momi, and myself. Yoshika and Tokiko have represented two people each (UK and J-Ko, and Murein and random bellhop, respectively). I don't think any other characters have been used to represent more than one of us; anyone is free to correct me on this.
AFAIK, there are places where you cannot import raw seeds, meat or grains in general, so corn on the cob could have been confiscated at the Japanese customs.
That's weird, there aren't any Hannaford's grocery stores near the Prudential center, and that corn is their store brand... Shaw's brand would have made sense since there is a Shaw's across the street from the con.
It's finally the last day.Time sure goes fast.It's corn.♡The purpose?Wow! What is it?By the way, I got a gift for you, Kogasa-san.♡Souvenir.♡Th-...thank you....Umm... what is this...?Here you go.♡Next morning.
