that's the thing about realistic art. The girls don't look as cute (hell, human characters in general don't tend to be as nicely stylized), but the animals start to look cooler.

I did too, at first, but honestly, I'm kinda disappointed that wasn't the case. For a minute, it looked like Habunake had just swallowed something whole, and I was thinking such a thing was rather nifty.
