In the series, the hardened steel blades are segmented like that. The characters don't break them off, though, they replace them from the racks on their hips, which store three blades each.
Kind of meaningless giving a SPACE-oriented MS a Three-Dimensional Maneuver Gear...
Actually, the artist gave an additional image that showed it's not actually 3D Maneuver Gear, but rather the thruster off of the movie's Gundam Zabanya, with the sheathes for the GN Sniper Rifle IIIs replaced by storage for the replaceable GN Swords based on the blades from Shingeki no Kyojin, all styled just to look like the 3D Maneuver Gear. Pretty clever, and cool lookin', imo.
